HOWE SOUND BREWING

FLAVORFUL HANDCRAFTED BEER IN SQUAMISH

Hop Farm Beginnings

Once a thriving and flourishing business more than a century ago, the Squamish Valley was known for its commercial hop farming, with the Squamish Valley Hop Ranch supplying hops to the British Empire. At this time, breweries also dotted the BC landscape, but with the advent of Prohibition the number of hops farms and operating breweries dwindled. By the 1970’s, only a few hop farms remained in BC, and the brewing scene was dominated by just a few large breweries.

Modern craft brewing

Proudly brewing award-winning ales in Squamish for over 20 years, we owe much of our early success to John Mitchell. He co-pioneered North America’s first modern craft brewery at Horseshoe Bay on BC’s spectacular Howe Sound back in 1982, with the assistance of Frank Appleton. The pair began what has become known as the “craft brewing renaissance.“

Well-balanced ales

Known as the “grandfather of micro-brewing in Canada,” John Mitchell helped design Howe Sound Brewery in 1996, working with founders Stephen Shard, Dave Fenn and Colleen Fenn.. He worked as our very first brewer, developing all of our initial recipes. We are proud of his ongoing relationship with our brewery. Today, we continue to brew in the craft style using unfiltered 100% barley mash. Our diverse selection of flavorful, well-balanced ales is constantly growing and changing with each passing season.

HopRaiser is an old term for a grower of hops, and this beer is named specifically for the Squamish Valley Hop Raising Company, which was established in the Squamish Valley in 1891, and sold hops to Canada, England and elsewhere over the next few decades. With the fall of hop prices during World War I, the hop company closed in 1917, and the farm was converted to cattle production. Today, wild hops can still be found along roadsides where the old hop farm was located. So join us in raising a pint to the hop – and our shared history with it – in the evolution of beer in all parts of the world.

The smoke does not overpower the beer but does balance out the sweetness of the beer. This is a fairly classic Scotch Ale and is well brewed. If you are a fan of peated malt, this is a beer that is not to miss.

BRAND: POTHOLE FILLER IMPERIAL STOUT

AVAILABILITY : FALL-WINTER

DESCRIPTION :  This Imperial Stout is part of the John Mitchell signature series of beers coming from the Squamish BC based brewery. Pouring from the large, resealable 1L bottle the Pothole Filler is a deep and very dark colour close to being black. The tar coloured stout is topped with two dense fingers of light brown head. This head settles slowly leaving a thick coat of lacing on the sides of the glass. Through this thick head comes an aroma of toasted malts, molasses and a touch of chocolate. The taste is thick, dark and heavy. While it may not be quite thick enough to fill an actual pothole it is quite close. The roasted malts have a slight burnt flavour to them and the molasses gives a deep and complex sweetness to the stout. Close to the finish of the beer a hop bitterness comes into play along side a cocoa flavour. These two bitter notes don’t go over the top but leave a strong and layered finish masking the big alcohol strength that may have otherwise taken over from the large 9% ABV. The Howe Sound Pothole Filler is a well known BC beer with a reputation to match. This is a big and bold imperial stout that ranks in the top of its style. It may be a bit much to drink on your own but it is easy to make friends with this delicious winter warmer.

BRAND: WOOLLY BUGGER BARLEY WINE

AVAILABILITY : FALL-WINTER

DESCRIPTION :  A staple among the annually released Barley Wines is Howe Sound’s Woolly Bugger. This beer is released each winter and comes in at 11% alcohol and 75 IBUs. Pouring from the bomber bottle it is rich and dark brown in colour topped with two fingers of head. The aroma is a touch boozy with notes of dried fruit, caramel, toffee and a touch of bitterness. Tasting the beer it is big bodied with a creamy, alcohol-rich character. The notes of lightly burnt caramel take charge on the palate with toffee notes and a slight, dried cherry character. It is no denying that this is an intense beer and the burnt bitter character gives balance to a sweetness that is bigger than some. As always the Woolly Bugger is a must hit on the Barley Wine circuit. Pick up a couple bottles while you can, one for this year and one to cellar for a rainy day.

BRAND:ASCENSION TRIPLE IPA

AVAILABILITY : FALL-WINTER

DESCRIPTION :  There are not a lot of Triple IPAs available in BC and at 11.0% this is a big beer! Coming in a bomber bottle rather than the typical 1000ml bottle Howe Sound’s core lineup come in this is a slightly more reasonable package size. From the bomber bottle the Ascension pours as an amber colour with two fingers of dense and heavily lacing head. From the beer comes a big nose of citrus, pine and light caramel notes. Surprisingly the aroma is not all that boozy despite the beer’s strength. The beer has a big and smooth body that leads into a fairly boozy flavour. A sweetness is joined with citrus notes, pine tones and a light tropical fruit flavour infusion. As far as IPAs go they don’t get much bigger than this but still the flavour is smooth and rather drinkable given the big alcohol content. Howe Sound has turned things up to 11% with the Ascension and there is no turning back!

The aroma is rich with peated malt, smoke aroma along with caramel and toffee character. Sipping the beer it has a distinct sweetness that is rich with caramel and those same toffee flavours from the nose. The smoke character also comes through with a decent intensity.
